MILLER R-II SCHOOL DISTRICT

Physical Education Syllabus

FOR: General Physical Education 9th-12th / 7th & 8th Grade Physical Education & Health

  1. Equipment & Locker Room
    1. Students are expected to “DRESS OUT”, prepared for class, actively participate and ready to learn every class period.  Non-dress days will severely affect your grade.
    2. The following clothing items are acceptable for students to wear for PE class: Tennis shoes, socks, gym shorts, T-shirts, sweat pants and sweat shirts.   (ALL clothes must meet school dress code.)  DO NOT wear the following for PE class: cut-off shorts or jean shorts, boxers, tank tops, street clothing, sweaters or athletic uniforms.  If you need help getting the approved clothing let me know.
    3. Lockers and locks are provided for students to use.  Please bring any personal hygiene items that you may need.  Lock up personal items and check to make sure lock is secure.  This means anything of value or that is valuable to you.  You are responsible for your belongings … KEEP YOUR LOCKER LOCKED!!!
    4. If the locker room is a mess you will need to tell a coach before anyone gets dressed out.  DO NOT use locker rooms during the day unless you are having class that period.  If you need to get clothes or other things out of your gym locker you will have until 3:15 and then no one should be in the locker room unless they are playing that season’s sport.
    5. Students may be required to bring a notebook, paper, pencil and pen to Physical Education and Health classes.  The teacher will let you know.
    6. Students are NOT to play or use any equipment unless a teacher has given them permission.
  2. Procedures
    1. Students will have 5-6 minutes to get dressed and be in their assigned spot for attendance.  You will be tardy if you are not seated when teacher starts to takes attendance or by getting to the locker room after the bell rings. (ALL students must be in their correct spot for attendance even if they are not dressed out.)
    2. Bring notebook, paper, pencil and pen when required.
    3. Students will have 5-8 minutes to get re-dressed at the end of the period, depending on the activity.  Students are to sit on the bleachers after re-dressing; they should not hang out in locker room.  Teacher will dismiss the class.
    4. If you choose not to dress out for class and not to participate NO points will be earn for that day.  But you will be required to walk in a designate area for the entire class time after attendance is taken.
    5. If you are injured or have an illness of a serious nature you must bring a parental note stating what is wrong.  If the injury or illness will be longer than 3 days a doctor’s note will be needed.  YOU MUST STILL DRESS OUT EVEN IF YOU HAVE A NOTE.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!  To earn your points for that day a PE make-up option will have to be done and turn in.  For everyday a student is unable to dress-out and participate in class due to injury or illness a PE make-up option will need to be done to earn points for that day.

  3. Workout / exercise correctly the entire period including warm-up, activity and cool down
  4. Cooperate and work together with classmates when playing team activities and games
  5. Demonstrate good work ethics and self motivation “Have Fun”
  6. Strive to do your BEST everyday  “Work-up-a-Sweat”

Failure to meet the daily participation requirements will result in the deduction of some or all of the participation points.

Success in class is directly related to students dressing out and actively participating.

  1. Physical Education class Make-up Options

The following are two ways to make-up a student’s NON-DRESS in PE class.  A NON-DRESS is anytime you do not dress out for class and choose not to participate in that days activity.  You do not earn the ten points for the day you are not dress-out and participating.  But you still will be required to walk where the teacher has asked you to. Students are allowed to make-up two NON-DRESS days per quarter.     Students must let the teacher know that they are planning to do a Make-up Option(s) for one or more non-dress days.  The teacher must approve all Make-up Option(s).

OPTION 1

Exercise at home, school, a fitness center, etc.  In DETAIL journal your workout and have a supervisor, coach or parent sign it.  Please be HONEST! The journal should include the duration of workout, date, reps and sets (exactly what your workout included).  60 minutes equals one missed day. YOU have 2 days to turn in work.  Student will not be reminded that they have make-up work to do.  Late work will not be accepted.  Include the date of your absence on your make-up option.

OPTION 2

You may pick an article from a magazine, journal, newspaper or from an internet source about a health or fitness related issue.  Read and write an abstract / summary of the articles in your own words.  DO NOT COPY THE ARTICLE!!!  Along with the summary give your opinion about the article.  What did you think about the article?  Was it useful or beneficial to you?  Explain why or why not.  Two pages hand written or one page (12 font, double space) equals one day of make-up.  You may use two different articles / topics for make-up.  Staple the article to the summary or if that is not possible, include the resource where it was found.  Be sure the summary is neat and legible for it to be graded.  Articles that are not complete or up to standards will not be accepted.  Make-up work is the responsibility of the students.  YOU have 2 days to turn in work.  Student will not be reminded that they have make-up work to do.  Late work will not be accepted.  Include the date of your absence on your make-up option.

***Safety is very important to ALL Physical Education classes.  Any unsafe actions are prohibited during class.  This includes the locker room.

***Please remember to use good judgment in the locker room… NO yelling, NO horseplay or NO profanity.

If you have any questions you may contact me at Miller High School 452-3271.  I am looking forward to the upcoming year.  Together we can make it a great experience and year.
