Mathematics and Engineering
High School students will have a new opportunity for the 2010 - 2011 school year. An engineering course, Introduction to Engineering Design will be taught by Mr. Erisman. There is no prerequisite but students who have taken Gateway to Technology in Junior High will be familiar with the software, Autodesk Inventor. The design process from determining a problem exists, through the research of existing products, preliminary design, testing of prototypes, to the final presentation of a finished product will be the focus of the course. This course takes the student through the design process using several projects. Some of the projects will actually be constructed after being designed on the 3D software program. One example is a 3 x3 x 3 puzzle cube. Students will have an opportunity to work as part of a design team whose members are not in the same town and perhaps not even in the same state. Students will practice several forms of hand sketching as this is necessary skill for engineers and engineering technologists on the job site. Reverse engineering, the practice of taking an object apart and determining how it works, will be studied. Engineering ethics is another topic students will discuss.
Mr. Erisman will also teach the upper level math courses as in the past. Pre Calculus and Trigonometry will be taught in the first and second semesters, respectively. College Algebra will be a full year course, as will Math Analysis. You will need to have your pencil, paper and textbook every day. A graphing calculator is recommended for PC and Trig. The school provides a Computer Algebra System graphing calculator for College Algebra. Math Analysis and Intro to Engineering Design students will need a scientific calculator.
