Class Offerings:
1. In The Mind of a Game - taught by Miss Winans
In this class, we will study the history of computer and video games and look at how these game systems and games are created. You will also be playing a variety of games - old and new - computer and video games - and analyzing different things about those games. You will also be able to choose your favorite video game system (Nintendo, Playstation, Wii, etc.) and do some research on the Internet to learn more about them. We will end the class by reading/playing the new interactive fiction book-games on the Internet. In these, you will actually be in the book playing a character in the game.
2. A Book of Champions - taught by Miss Winans
In this class, we will be creating and producing a short
yearbook or memory book.
We will learn the basics of photography and how to edit pictures
using Adobe Photoshop Elements. We will learn about journalism,
reporting, and story writing. Each student will be responsible for
2 pages worth of pictures and articles in our summer book of
memories. We will print these yearbooks ourselves in black and
white, bind them, and sell them for $2 each to any student in
summer school who is interested.
3. Mixed Martial Arts - taught by Mr. Gibbs
In this class, you will study the old
UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) bouts on film.
You will also learn basic techniques in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,
stand-up self-defense, and Muay Thai boxing. We will have
guest speakers from a variety of styles of mixed martial arts.
This class will be a mixture of classroom studies and strenuous
physical activity. You will need to bring gym clothes EACH
DAY and you will be given time to change.
ALL

A country’s culture is much more than
just the language. In this class, you will study the language and
culture of Spanish speaking countries. You will analyze
movies that demonstrate Latin American culture and acquire some
basic communication skills. We will study Spanish art and
poetry (Spanish is the language of poets).

Bilingual = Cool
5. Get Your Head in the Game - taught by Miss Bowden
Ever wanted to win every game you
play?
In this class, you will learn sure-fire ways to do well in a
large variety of games. We will cover mathematical strategies for
winning game shows, board games and even physical sports.
We will also be applying these strategies during class that means
we will get to watch and play game shows, board games and sports.
If you apply what you have learned in this class in your
everyday life, you will become a champion in whatever you decide to
do.
6. Cracking the ACT - taught by Miss Bowden
In just 22 days, you can learn tips and tricks to crack the ACT. You will be learning tips from the Princeton Review book Cracking the ACT, as well as ACT prep software from the ACT organization. After reading Cracking the ACT, I personally raised my score 5 points, so I believe in these strategies. This class will give you the tools to improve your ACT score. Higher ACT scores will do many things: improve your chances on various college enrollments, gain scholarships, guarantee participation in special programs in college like the medical and education fields, as well as decrease worries about getting into college. With just a few half days of this class, your entire future could be changed!
7. Band Camp - taught by Mr. and Mrs. Fox
If you choose to participate in
“Band Camp”, you will not take any other classes. You will be in
here the entire school day!
We will be concentrating on field show for the 2009 competition
season. This also includes colorguard members who have auditioned
in May of 2009. If you are planning on being in band during the
09-10 school year, you really need to plan on attending!
7. Credit Recovery - taught by Mr. Tutterow
This class is for all 9th - 12th grade students who need to complete credits needed for graduation. Please see Dr. Robinson or Mr. Tutterow for specific details as to class options and permission.
