Attendance Counts!

Continuous Improvement Involves Everyone

by Terry Robinson

February 04, 2009

Parents and guardians we need your help. At the high school and junior high school numerous absences have lowered our overall attendance rate to an unacceptable level. Learning and opportunities are negatively impacted when attendance is low. Also, the programs and opportunities available can begin to shrink due to decreased funding linked to average daily attendance. Our school operates as a professional learning community and uses a continuous improvement model to address important issues such as attendance. In this model everyone has a part in improving student achievement. High School teachers are working this month to provide incentives for students to be in school - we want tangible, regular rewards students can get excited about and look forward to. Our office staff is tracking absences and communicating new board policies regarding attendance to students and the community, our counselor is available to support your efforts to keep your son or daughter engaged and the principal's office is working on plans to regularly and publicly recognize student achievement. We need you to emphasize the importance of your son or daughter being in school and encourage them to be involved in activities and athletics. Every student can find a place to belong and excel both in the classroom and outside the classroom in extra-curricular activities. Miller Junior High and High School needs your support to keep kids engaged. You can do this by setting goals with your son or daughter about their grades and attendance; celebrating their success with a party, dinner out, or a special privilege is a great way to get your son or daughter motivated. Let us know if we can support you in any way and help us help your son or daughter reach their potential. If you have a business or other way to contribute to incentives for good attendance, please contact the principal's office and let us know what you can do to help us reward deserving students. Spread the word! Attendance and Achievement Count!
