A+ Schools' Program Breaks Ground
Miller High School to Seek Designation

May 08, 2007
Miller High School is pursuing designation in Missouri's A+ Schools' Program, a school improvement initiative that provides tuition benefits for students to attend Missouri community colleges and technical/vocational schools.
The district began the designation process in 2006 and will be evaluated during the 2007-2008 school year by a panel made up of area A+ Coordinators and the Missouri Department of Education officials for the purpose of designation.
Once formally approved, students who have signed the Miller A+ Schools agreement and meet the basic requirements will be able to access the benefits to attend college.
The basic student requirements are:
- Sign the intent to participate A+ Agreement
- Attend a designated A+ school for three consecutive years prior to high school graduation
- Graduate from high school with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Maintain at least a cumulative attendance of 95% or better for grades 9-12
- Perform 50 hours of unpaid school-based tutoring/mentoring
- Maintain a record of "Good Citizenship" and avoid the unlawful use of drugs and alcohol
- Make a documented good faith effort to secure all available federal post-secondary student financial assistance funds that do not require prepayment (FAFSA)
- Register for selective service if male, age 18 before graduation
Becoming an A+ School will benefit our students because it will give them the financial resources to pursue a college education, especially for those who might not otherwise be able to afford college. Another benefit of the program is the requirement of tutoring by students involved in the program. The tutoring component could have a district-wide impact as A+ students will be involved with younger students.
A parent meeting will be held May 16th, 6:00PM at the high school for additional information.
